Manned Aerial Surveys (MAS) are used for recording marine fauna over large oceanic areas. These surveys are often conducted in larger twin-engine aircraft that meet the CASA safety standards for flying offshore.
Surveys include four experienced marine fauna observers and pilots. The aircraft is configured to include two platforms to account for perception and availability bias, in order to estimate the population of animals in the area of interest.
These surveys target dugongs, turtles, humpback whales, and other cetaceans.
Unmanned Aerial Surveys (UAS) are used for recording flora and fauna over smaller areas of interest. These surveys are conducted using drones or Remote Pilot Aircraft (RPA) to record a snapshot image of an area or habitat. UAS's are designed and implemented to address scientific questions relating to changes in habitat characteristics, distribution and abundance of flora and fauna and fauna movements.
UAS's can be applied to coastal assessments (e.g. beach erosion/accretion), reef habitat mapping, recording turtle tracks, bird abundance estimates and many more possibilities based on the question.
